🏈 Where to Watch the Superbowl

If you’re watching from your friend’s house and bringing a dish, make your life easier by ordering “Superbowl Take Out” ahead of time from Cast Iron Tavern. Deviled Eggs, Wings, Green Chili Mac, Pulled Pork Sliders…shooooot, now I’m hungry. 😆

If you’re looking looking to get out and watch with the energy of a crowd, there are a couple of options around town…

And this Goose would be remiss not to mention the PUPPY BOWL Watch Pawty at noon at The Golden Mill. Very on brand with the Goldens in Golden weekend. 🦮

🔎 Around Golden: The FIRST Experimental Mine (Pt 2)

I promise that not every week is about mines or Mines, BUT consider this Part 2 of last week’s issue on the Subterranean School of Rock (& Science) while it’s on my min(e)d. 🤣 (Oh boy…off to a rocky start.)

Before Colorado School of Mines took over the Edgar Mine in Idaho Springs, students had a much closer hands-on learning experience—right on Mt. Zion. In 1907, Mines built its first experimental mine within easy walking distance of campus, and referred to it as the School Tunnel. Unlike the later Edgar Mine, this one had no valuable ores; it was a classroom carved into rock, designed for practical instruction in mining and engineering. Under the guidance of faculty, students expanded the tunnel themselves.

Outside of class, the mine’s Shaft House became an after-hours student hangout. It was the unofficial venue for parties, fraternity initiations, and freshman hazing. The tradition of painting class years on the Shaft House made it a visual time capsule of Mines history.

However, as Mines grew, so did the need for a more sophisticated training site. By 1922, the Mt. Zion mine was demolished. Yet, students continued gathering at the site well into the 1930s.
