📚 Bookstore Appreciation: The Heart of the Community

“I want it to be a space where people can actually gather and have conversations. Not just a buy a book and leave."

Sydney Ivey, owner of The Spicy Librarian

In an age dominated by digital screens, the resurgence of independent bookstores is a comforting reminder of community, creativity, and connection. Bookstores have long served as sanctuaries for stories and seekers, offering not just shelves of books but also spaces for solace and discovery. After the recent fires in Los Angeles, neighborhood bookstores became beacons of light, offering comfort, rebuilding efforts, and a vital “third place” of social interaction.

Here in Colorado, a new chapter is being written with the opening of specialty bookstores like The Spicy Librarian in Denver’s RiNo district. Not only does it celebrate the romance genre, but it also stands as a testament to the growing demand for community-centered literary experiences, offering Silent Book Club, Galantine Craft Night, and other events. Owner Sydney Ivey’s vision of a female-positive, shame-free space has attracted readers from all walks of life.

Independent bookstores are proof that stories still bring people together. Whether by rebuilding communities or simply reminding us of the ✨magic✨ of the written word, they remain invaluable anchors in our neighborhoods.

🔎 Around Golden: The Lost Cemetery

Did you know Golden’s first cemetery is lost to history? Somewhere on the southern grounds of the Lookout Mountain Youth Services Center lies what remains of the original Golden Cemetery—a mystery buried beneath time.

The only clue we have comes from George West, the founder of Golden and editor of the Colorado Transcript. In a June 20, 1900 article, he recounted that this early burial ground was about a quarter-mile south of what was then a reform school, near the road to Denver. According to West, the first burials included John Carter, who was accidentally shot in 1859, and a child of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Potts. After October of 1860, Golden’s burials were moved to what became known as Cemetery Hill, and the early graves were forgotten—no official records, just whispers of history.

Today, the original cemetery remains a hidden part of Golden’s story.
