The City of Golden is seeking new public art to enhance Ulysses Park as part of it's redevelopment. Submissions are due by January 21.
(The city is also adding multi-use sports fields ⚽️ to replace the Rooney Road Sports Complex, where they have a 20-year lease that’s up in 2026.)

🔎 Around Golden: the Funicular
If you were single and ready to mingle in Golden’s early days, the Lava Lane Dance Hall 🌋 atop Castle Rock was the place to be—and getting there was half the fun! From 1913 to 1915, the Castle Rock Funicular with its 32-seat car and 30 minute trip, took visitors up the steep slope for just 50 cents.
At the top, the dance hall buzzed with music, but its reputation wasn’t all glitter—it was also rumored to host meetings of the Ku Klux Klan, a dark stain on its past.
The funicular lasted only two years, and the dance hall burned down in 1927, but traces of their history remain etched into the mountain. The old line is still visible, its path scarred into the slope, and bolts and foundation remnants can still be found atop Castle Rock.
Stay safe. Stay warm. See you in your inbox again on Monday—MLK day.
Your friendly neighborhood goose 🪿,
Kelsey
